Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is being described by critics as one of the most cynical PS5 and PS4 releases in quite some time, and itβs getting battered by reviews. While weβre still taking our time to work through the campaign and multiplayer maps, the releaseβs Metacritic score currently sits at just 50, with only titles like Crime Boss: Rockay City and The Lord of the Rings: Gollum scoring lower.
This is a disastrous result for a series thatβs generally dependable at worst. While the quality of Call of Duty has certainly varied over the years, Activision almost always delivers a decent experience β and the franchise has never been panned quite like this. Aside from the below par campaign, most critics seem to be taking issue with the fact that this is clearly a DLC repackaged as a full-price product.
The word is that the game was developed in just 18 months, and staff were forced to work weekends and evenings in order to get it finished. We posted a comparison of the remastered multiplayer maps recently, and concluded that the new levels lack the character of the originals. Itβll be interesting to see how these disappointing reviews affect sales β if, indeed, they have any impact at all.

People will still buy it. Itβs the new Call of Duty.
Itβs completely over saturated with pointless content now. Surely they would be better off making the multiplayer free to play and release a quality standalone campaign every three years. The same should happen with eafc and ultimate team mode. The quest to squeeze every last drop of cash from people has completely ruined the franchise
Chew,chew,chew...incidently whilst crime boss is a bad game my nephews having a blast with it as he says he's not laughed as much at anything since he read the hogwarts comments sections. That alone for me gave the game a few kudos points..
@gomersoul yeah its tarnished the game for me. I'll just play the new version of warzone when it launches..until they start charging for that π€£
@gomersoul
Consumer habits have changed. Before, people would only buy a new release every few months. Now, a lot of people buy a game a week. A game with a great core hook but released without DLC will only sell for a short time. In 2023 Battle/Premium Passes, constant drip feed of new content to keep the FOMO alive and stop players from lapsing or moving to something else is just as important as attracting them in the first place, and will have been budgeted as such by the publisher. The clicks, social media interactions, and dripfeed of βcontentβ attempts to stop people from moving on to the next hot thing a week later.
Iβm sure Iβm not telling you anything you donβt already know, but the days of complete multiplayer games being released on day one are long behind us.
Itβs honestly not as bad as everyone says. At least IMHO. Iβve been playing it all weekend and while itβs not exactly the best theyβve ever done w the game, itβs definitely not the worst either. People are just hating on it (I feel like) because we were told there wouldnβt be a major release this year and that it would just be like a big DLC package then they said there would be a full release but when it came out, aspects of it were a little βunderbakedββ and the trophy stack (on PS5 at least) IS DLCβ¦β¦ for MW2. So, I get some peopleβs disdain for it, but by no means is it a terrible game and worthy of the low score people are giving it purely out of hate. All in all itβs still a solid shooter and certainly FARRRRRRR better than your average Battlefield game on release day. ππ€£ Plus, thereβs some solid ideas in there in terms of how they approached some of the SP missions (open combat missions) and zombies as well. Whether you like those approaches or not is a matter of taste but at least they took some chances this time around and shook things up. Everyone complains about how itβs always the same thing every year, but as soon as they shake it up a little, everyone complains itβs terrible. LOL. Whatever. People are just fickle and impossible to pleaseβ¦β¦.
@DETfaninATL "As soon as they shake it up a little, everyone complains it's terrible"
What are you talking about? People complained about it because the "Open Combat Missions" "Open world zombies mode" is just using the warzone maps. Not to mention people praised Black Ops Cold War since it ACTUALLY shook things up because it had multiple branching paths. That isn't to say it's Sledgehammer Games fault because they literally had a year and a half to make this game.
Each new entry in the franchise is as refreshing as each new PS5 firmware update.
@Stevemalkpus unfortunately
Looks like it doesn't matter if you have 12 years (Diablo 4) or 18 months (this CoD), AB is starting to screw up everything it touches...
People will get this and be like "it's a really good game, you just need to give it a chance, trust me bro"
I still want them to sell campaings separately.
@DETfaninATL How you talk about it is saying a lot it's like you are trying to sell the game to yourself.
The game may not be the worst but it's mediocre at best its a old mappack with not a lot of passion in it with a short development time that is totally overpriced.
In the end most people know it's a β¬30/40 release at best. Its not a one or stuff like that it's just to expensive for what it is.
@DETfaninATL Not sure why you're trying so hard to defend this game, I mean, it is Acti after all; they're kind of indefensible right now. People aren't hating cause they're haters; they're rightfully calling out the BS premium release that this game is. Even the fanbase is let down.
I preordered (Vault Edition π¬) and regret it massively. It's the worst CoD I've paid for. Campaign was such a let down ππ» MP is.... Same old. Zombies is pretty fun but gets boring quick.
it definitely feels like DLC
For the campaign, the reviews are completely justified being low.
It'll sell by the bucket load.
Regardless of content or quality.
Because sheep be sheep.
The only nice thing to say about the campaign is it does try something different. Multiplayer is back to the same feel as Cold War. So for me it's ace, as MW2 was so slow. Haven't tried zombies yet.
@SJR How is MP the same old when it's faster than MW2?
@TheOldHunter4K Oh mighty gamer that is not a sheep. π Please bless us with the games that u are playing. π
@Nexozi
E.T. on Atari.
Come at me. π
@TheOldHunter4K π A man of class π
@DETfaninATL Dude the open combat missions are trash this was clear from the first announcement, you literally wander around the warzone map alone like it's sniper ghost warrior or something and the only reason the campaign is like that is because of the 18 months same for the multiplayer maps no new one's just really low quality overhauls.
I have modded SSE a game from 2016 which is a a remaster of a 2011 game, i have modded this to a point it looks better than this year's call of duty, lazy game made by a scummy company that exists to trick naive kids into spending their pocket money on it hence why they put dumb stuff like celebrities, teddy bear outfits and superheroes when it's supposed to be military shooter not a children's entertainment circus
@Flaming_Kaiser Believe it or not, I largely agree with your reply, actually. As I stated in my post, "while itβs not exactly the best theyβve ever done w the game, itβs definitely not the worst either". I'd call that 'mediocre'. And I don't disagree with some of the criticisms levelled against it, like it's basically a large DLC pack worth only $40-50, the graphics are a bit sub-standard in spots, it feels rushed, some of the ideas that they used to 'shake things up' (the entire zombies mode for example), as I put it, fall flat (at least IMHO), etc. But even so, it still plays solidly, and is a relatively fun game. I look at it this way - compare COD to your favorite band. Sometimes they put out phenomenal albums, sometimes they put out sub-standard efforts. But if you like that band, what they do and their style of music, you're going to find something enjoyable in every album they put out. For me, COD is like that. Is MW III a great game? No way. But is it still fun to play even if some of it falls flat? Absolutely. And that's ultimately the true measuring stick for ANY piece of entertainment - is it enjoyable? So, for me, while I wouldn't rate this as one of the best, I wouldn't say it's the absolute worst either. And again, it's FAR better than ANY Battlefield game at release than there has been in over a decade so, kudos there.
@Deityjester I certainly respect your opinion as, entertainment is a subjective thing. But I also respectfully disagree with you that the open combat missions are trash. I actually quite like them and think it's a good change of pace and a fresh approach. I quite like the freedom of tackling objectives however I want. Then again, I NEVER, EVER play Warzone so maybe that's why I like it? Regardless, to each their own.
@JB_Whiting Oh I don't know. I wouldn't say I'm 'trying so hard to defend it' at all. I just think it's getting a worse rap than it deserves and ultimately people are fickle and hard to please. Read some of my responses to others - I absolutely have my issues with the game, but I also enjoy it overall. Not too thrilled with what they've done with zombies but it still has a modicum of enjoyment to it.
The reuse of old maps is ridiculous. I played these maps to death when the were originally used, there is absolutely no excuse for refusing them!!
I didn't like the disjointed feel of the first Modern Warfare remake and haven't touched the series since.
Honestly? Good.
CoD may be a money printing machine for Activision, but to me, it just feels like a hollow shell, especially when compared to so many other games that release every year.
Lol they got the money truck from Microsoft and checked out. π€£
Theyβre still gonna sell millions.
Snore Of Duty: Modern Borefare, See?
I say this for the humour, not having played a lot of CoD beyond the awesome Zombies mode of the original 2010 Black Ops. I don't plan to play this either lol.
Yet the ππππ still bought it.multiplayer and zombies should be made free to play with all the packs available to buy if u should wish to do so and every couple of years release a massive single player game with branching paths and dialogue choices which is a good 20/30 hours long set all around different world locations.even have some sort of squad command element in it as well.
Would be amazing but u can only wishβ₯οΈπ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ
